Spaces available

Raven Row is offering rent-free spaces to groups or organisations

While Raven Row is taking a break from making exhibitions, single (ex-gallery) rooms are available rent-free for 1 year periods (or 6 months if preferred). A total of 5 rooms are available.

Raven Row is inviting applications from groups (interpreted as consisting of three or more people) or organisations that wish to use the rooms, and are based broadly in the visual arts, although cross-disciplinary work will be considered positively.

Applicants will be selected by a panel. See below.

Applications can propose any use for these rooms, although expectations will be for artistic projects, and forms of research and production (that might function harmoniously alongside other occupants).

Activity is imagined principally to be desk-based. Small scale production might be possible but the rooms are not suitable for fabrication or loud noise. No heavy equipment or ‘wet’ materials may be used.

Applications are especially encouraged from groups or organisations working on collaborative and social projects (e.g. group or collective artistic, architectural or literary practice, grassroots activity/activism, work with communities, education, urbanism etc.).

Rooms will not be available for public exhibitions, events or open meetings. Access to the building will be by invitation (of the occupants) and pre-arrangement only.

Groups might not have existed prior to making an application to Raven Row. Alternatively, groups or organisations could already have access to other working space but might wish to demarcate room in Raven Row for an extension of their activities.

Only non-commercial activity will be considered. Preference will be for groups or organisations that don’t receive regular funding.

Each group will receive a grant of £1,000 from Raven Row at the start of their tenancy.

A letter of agreement will be signed between Raven Row and tenants

Tenants/occupants will have access to the building between 10am and 6pm Mondays and Tuesdays, and between 10am and 9pm Wednesdays to Fridays. While Piper Keys (see below) have exhibitions open (approximately 5 weekends out of 7) access will be possible on Saturdays and Sundays between 12pm and 6pm.

Heating, light, and wi-fi will be provided by Raven Row. Tenants/occupants should provide furniture (rooms will be un-furnished).

Tenants/occupants will have access – for their own use only - to a furnished meeting room, kitchen and small lounge area. There may also be occasional access to the larger spaces on the ground floor, for work in larger groups etc.

Occupants will be expected to be in the building a minimum of 2 days per week, but preferably 3 or more days.

Raven Row is an historic building, and unfortunately access is only possibly by staircase.

Longlisted applications will be reviewed by a panel consisting of Alessio Antoniolli (Director, Gasworks) Janna Graham (Lecturer in Visual Cultures, Goldsmiths), Melanie Keen (Director, Iniva), Jenni Lomax (Trustee, Raven Row) and Alex Sainsbury (Director, Raven Row).

Please submit applications to by the end of Friday 13 April. Applicants will be notified on 8 May for tenancy/occupation from around 4 June 2018.

(Single room spaces are available on Raven Row’s upper floors. There is no need to specify your preferences or precise requirements but available spaces range between 18m2 and 34m2).

Applicants should use up to 300 words to explain why they need the room, how (and how much) they would use it (whether they would like it for 6 or 12 months), and how they would spend the grant of £1,000.

Supporting background documentation would be helpful, of a maximum of 2 sheets of information (and/or a maximum of 5 images and 2 links).

Applicants should be aware that the panel will be looking to make a stimulating and diverse mix of residents, seeking variety and possible correspondences (although no formal exchange between occupants will be expected or required). Such decisions will inevitably be subjective.

Applicants will be accepted after a conversation at Raven Row.
