Remarks by Michael Glasmeier and Doreen Mende, on KP Brehmer and the publication, at 18.00

This is the first monograph on KP Brehmer (1938-97) to appear in English and the first major publication on the artist since the catalogue from Museum Fridericianum, Kassel, in 1998.

Brehmer’s earliest work is associated with Capitalist Realism – the initiative centred around Galerie René Block in Berlin in the mid- to late 1960s, that included fellow artists Konrad Lueg, Sigmar Polke and Gerhard Richter. From West Berlin, the artist confronted the visual regimes of the Cold War. Using common information systems as templates – figures and charts from educational books and magazines, maps of racism and fascism and graphics from sociological studies – he linked data-management to the operations of capitalism, and anticipated much of the effects of its globalisation familiar today.

The publication is richly illustrated with previously unpublished archival images as well as photographs from Brehmer’s exhibition at Raven Row (September – November 2014). Texts both historic and commissioned focus on Brehmer’s practice during the 1960s and 1970s and its resonance today: by Jürgen Becker, René Block, KP Brehmer, Mark Fisher, Doreen Mende, Alex Sainsbury and Kerstin Stakemeier.
