A reading group that takes Shireen Banu, enigmatic figure involved in A Woman's Place, as a departure point to examine how the domestic, as a contested site of power and self-production, has been explored by women of colour artists. Drawing on archive material from the Women of Colour Index at the Women’s Art Library, work by Maxine Walker, Ingrid Pollard and participants of the workshop, will be activated through food, text, conversations and gesture. 

Participants are invited to bring a family photograph related to the domestic that they would be willing to share with the group.

The Women of Colour Index (WOCI) Reading Group was founded in October 2016 by artists, Samia Malik, Michelle Williams Gamaker and Rehana Zaman. The WOCI Reading Group meets once a month at the Women’s Art Library, Goldsmiths University, to discuss the work of women of colour artists from an index collated by Rita Keegan. The WOCI Reading Group aims to improve the visibility of women of colour artists and create a framework for engaging with these works. Critical discussion is encouraged through performative readings, text, audio and film. All people of all backgrounds, genders, sexualities, religions and race are welcome.
