Camp de Thiaroye [The Camp at Thiaroye]
Dir. Ousmane Sembène and Thierno Faty Sow, 1988
Senegal, Algeria, Tunisia
Introduced by actor Sidiki Bakaba
This historic epic is the first Pan-African film produced without European technical assistance or co-financing. After having fought in the French army during the Second World War, Senegalese soldiers rebel when, instead of being repatriated to their villages, they find themselves quartered in a prison-like transit camp outside of Dakar. Under Sembène’s masterful direction, the film draws a sinister picture of a true tale of oppression, and the cost of being caught between two cultures.
